Back Roads

This afternoon Brenda and I decided to go and find the foothills that we can see from our dairies after going and finding a local fruit stand to buy apricots, cherries, plums, tomatoes, and peaches from. What we thought would be a quick drive ended up taking most of the afternoon, but that was okay.

We set out by taking back roads, starting at our dairies, and heading west.

They were getting closer and closer and then suddenly....

The road was blocked by a fence with lots of padlocks! They really didn't want us to get through. So we turned around, went across a big canal, and set off in search of another road.

We found one that looked like it would go through so we took it!

We were kinda in the middle of nowhere when suddenly...

We found ourselves on the other side of the padlocked fence! We thought it was kind of ridiculous to have one road blocked off when you could get to it another way without trespassing or doing anything illegal.

Tonight I went out and took pictures of some of the cows and heifers on the dairy because it was too nice out to be inside washing my dishes. This first picture is of Olympia, one of the show cows. She is so friendly!

These two are show heifers that I'm helping train to lead on a halter.

This is Grace. She is one of the two Brown Swiss cows that we have on the dairy. She is very friendly and very big compared to the Jerseys that are everywhere else.

  1. Howdy, Erin! You don't know me, but just like you I'm a plains girl relocated to the hills of northern California. I'm also working in ag, except instead of boots I put on pumps and sit in an office building all day. (Some days I would much rather be earing boots and shoveling poop...that's just the farm girl in me, though.) Long story short, I know your dad from Truth About Agriculture, and he suggested that I touch base with you.

I'm doing an internship in Sacramento with AdFarm, an agricultural communications firm that has locations all over the U.S. and Canada. Sounds like we aren't (that) far away from each other. Maybe if we can plan out the logistics a bit, we could arrange to meet up. I know you're incredibly busy, but if you have have a chance to get away on a weekend, or would like a visitor, let me know.

It's always great to meet other aggies my age, especially out here in a new place!

  2. Hey Kelly! I thought I recognized your name when I got a notification about your comment! My dad has mentioned you and that you are in Sacramento. I would love to meet up with you sometime! If you are ever in the area let me know, and I will do the same. I'm pretty sure that I'll be up in Sacramento for the State Fair in July, but I'm not sure exactly when.

  3. I plan on heading to the state fair; will you be around for the dairy shows? I plan on heading down your way plenty this summer, and actually drove through your area while I was traveling on business last week. (We were in Modesto.)

If you want, shoot me an email at kelly.m.rivard@gmail.com and we can keep in touch that way. It would definitely be great to have another contact my age in this state!
